Drink Like A Coed At L.A.’s Public School 213

Summer is (almost) officially over so you know what that means? It’s Back To School season! Ok, so the majority of us are long out of our college days, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still drink like a coed.

Welcome to Public School 213, a scholastic-themed restaurant and bar known for its locally-sourced craft beers, elevated bar snacks and cool neighborhood crowd. This downtown classroom boasts a decor complete with industrial bulbs, brick walls and oversized bar. Just in time for football season, the USC watch bar, has also added in a large projector and two additional TVs this year, making it a prime spot to cheer on the Trojans. There is also a large private dining area for those interested in group viewing parties.

The rotating craft-beer program here is certainly strong. On draft you’ll find local brews such as Lagunitas IPA from Petaluma, California, as well as other west coast beers like California Amber by Ballast Point Brewing Co. in San Diego and Kellerweis By Sierra Nevada in Chico, California. There is also a number of bottles and can selections including the Coconut Porter by Maui Brewing Co. and Pale Ale by Made West.

The large sized Study Group beer menu is meant to be split with friends and includes the Peanut Butter Milk Stout by Belching Beaver Brewery from Vista, California and Tricerahops by Ninkasi Brewing Co. from Eugene, Oregon. You can also order the “Extra Credit” which is a changing limited release bottle selected by the bar’s very own beer expert.

While beer may be Public School’s best subject, its cocktails shouldn’t be overlooked. The Thyme After Thyme is made with Grey Goose vodka, cranberry, apple cider and thyme. The Light My Fire is a popular choice made with El Silencio Mezcal passionfruit, housemade serrano agave and a splash of lime juice. If you are a whiskey lover, the Ryder’s in the Storm made with Bulleit Rye, Liquor 43, fresh squeezed lime juice and a dash of old fashioned bitters is your jam.

Of course, with all that booze, the elevated bar snacks come in handy. Some of the menu standouts include their infamous Bacon Cheddar Tots, BBQ Bison Burger, Wagyu Corndogs and Skirt Steak Tacos. Leave room for dessert like the Nutella Cookie Sandwich with chocolate chunk, vanilla ice cream and pecan bacon brittle or do an adult dessert beverage like a Mexican Coffee with Corralejo Blanco tequila, Kahlua, whipped cream and cinnamon.

For boozy brunchers, enjoy the specialty early cocktail menu which includes Mimosas, Beermosas with fresh squeezed orange juice and Avery White Rascal and Micheladas with Mama’s Little Yella Pils, lime juice, housemade bloody mix and togarashi. But it’s their signature Bloody Marys with housemade bloody mix, bacon sea salt rim and topped with a chicken wing, pickled veggies that are the best. Order these libations alongside the Eggs Benedict Pizza with prosciutto, Grana Padano, hollandaise, two fried eggs or the Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes.

And don’t forget recess (AKA happy hour) starting at 3 p.m. every day. Here you can play with $5 bites, well drinks and house wines, $6 handles and $15 half liters of wine.
