Gun Metal Blue at Porchlight

There is something about a blue drink that makes everyone in the bar stop and stare. The Gun Metal Blue at Porchlight has certainly become a showstopper, social media superstar and the “it” cocktail to order at this NYC bar. Created by Nick Bennett, Head Bartender, the inspiration for the now iconic Gun Metal Blue came to him before they opened Porchlight over three years ago.

Bennett explains, “I was looking into New Orleans cocktails and it came to mind that everyone always remembers drinking their first Hand Grenade. So, I was looking for something like that, a beautifully gaudy, colorful, head-turning cocktail. Sadly, the recipe for the Hand Grenade is a proprietary recipe, so I was forced to work from memory of the several ones I sampled during my ‘research’.”

He goes on to say, “I wasn’t trying to recreate the Hand Grenade but I wanted a drink that was just as much of a head-turner and as much fun as a bartender to make as it would be for a guest to drink. And what ingredient is more fun than Blue Curaçao?  To keep ahead of anyone that assume it was going to be too sweet, we used a smoky mezcal and a bitter cinnamon syrup. Finally, it is garnished with a quick flash of flamed orange zest of the top. The look of surprise and enjoyment that I see when someone tastes it for the first time is one of my favorite moments any given shift.”
